BIBLE STUDY:

We believe that the Bible contains the Word of God. To be in relationship with God one must be closely related to God’s Word.  We must hear it, read it, study it and have it become a regular “touch” to our lives.

There are study opportunities at Hope Lutheran.  The studies are at varying days and times, and on varying subjects.  Take a look at the opportunities below and then make a commitment to be involved.

Crossways course.  Offered each Sunday morning at 11:30 am. A Bible Survey study taught by Pastor Carl.

Men’s Bible Study - taught each Tuesday morning at 6:00 am at the Coffee House in the El Camino Real Spencer’s Shopping Center.

Study of Sermon Texts - taught at the Coffee House Tuesdays at 7:00 am immediately following the above study. A look at the texts on which the sermon for the following Sunday will be based. Taught by Pastor Carl.

Some Prayers:

These are some prayers that you might find helpful, from the Leaders Guide for "If You Want To Walk On Water, You've Got To Get Out Of The Boat" by John Ortberg:

Oh God, let this be my prayer every day. Keep me from thinking any critical thought. Keep me from blaming others for anything. Keep me from being resentful. Keep me from saying or thinking any hurtful thing about anyone. Help me today and every day to think good and do good regardless of what anyone else may say or do. Spirit of all power and goodness, quite my mind. Help me to be still enough to hear your voice. Help me to stop worrying and fretting. Help me to stop rebelling against circumstances. Help me to feel the joy. Help me to be like Jesus. Amen.

Dear God, please help us to recognize, appreciate, and use the gifts you have given to us. It's so easy for us to be afraid of bringing out our gifts. It's so easy to create excuses for why we aren't using them. It's so easy to think they aren't as valuable as the gifts you have given to others. Yet, using our gifts in obedience to you brings glory to you and joy and peace into our lives. Give us the faith to step out and start reaching the true potential you have for us. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

Dear God, you've created each of us to be special and you want us to step out in faith and trust you. There's so much difference between knowing about you and knowing you well enough to trust you fully. Please draw us close to you and reveal what you want each of us to do and who you want us to be. Give us a deep desire to know you better, to be willing to step out in faith every day. Life with you is supposed to be an adventure, and we want to experience life with you. Thank you for loving us so much and for always being at work in our lives. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

Dear God, life often doesn't turn out the way we plan. But like the disciples in the boat, we have a choice to trust you or to be fearful and look for security in circumstances, possessions, or people. You understand how fearful we are, which is why you so often tell us not to be afraid. Please help us trust you more so that we can face life's storms with greater confidence, hope, and faith. Give us the sensitivity to hear your call and the courage to face whatever storms we encounter as we step out in faith toward you. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

Dear God, it's so easy to focus on our difficulties rather than on you, to try to figure out how to escape the storms and caves rather than trusting you to handle things. Please fill us with your love and help us to remember that you are always faithful no matter how difficult our lives may be. You are with us always, no matter how bad things get, and you invite us to complain to you about any of our concerns. Thank you for caring about even our smallest needs. Make us willing to risk failure in order to trust you and experience what you have in store for us. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

Don't let your worries get the best of you; remember, Moses started out as a basket case.

Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited until you try to sit in their pews.

Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisors.

It is easier to preach ten sermons than it is to live one.

The good Lord didn't create anything without a purpose, but mosquitoes come close.

When you get to your wit's end, you'll find God lives there.

People are funny; they want the front of the bus, the middle of the road, and the back of the church.

Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on your front door forever.

Quit griping about your church; if it was perfect, you couldn't belong.

If the church wants a better pastor, it only needs to pray for the one it has.

God Himself does not propose to judge a man until he is dead. So why should you?

Some minds are like concrete thoroughly mixed up and permanently set.

Peace starts with a smile.

I don't know why some people change churches; what difference does it make which one you stay home from?

A lot of church members who are singing "Standing on the Promises" are just sitting on the premises.

We were called to be witnesses, not lawyers or judges.

Be ye fishers of men. You catch them - He'll clean them.

Coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous.

Don't put a question mark where God put a period.

Don't wait for 6 strong men to take you to church.

Forbidden fruits create many jams.

God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

God grades on the cross, not the curve.

God loves everyone, but probably prefers "fruits of the spirit" over "religious nuts!"

God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.

He who angers you , controls you!

If God is your Co-pilot - swap seats!

Prayer: Don't give God instructions -- just report for duty!

The task ahead of us is never as great as the Power behind us.

The Will of God never takes you to where the Grace of God will not protect you.

We don't change the message, the message changes us.

You can tell how big a person is by what it takes to discourage him.

The best mathematical equation I have ever seen:
        1 cross + 3 nails = 4 given.
